What is a SOC?

At its core Security Operations Centre (SOC) is a way to reduce the cyber risk for an organisation. It is a 24/7 service that is provided by a security operations centre, that gives organisations some kind of advantage to defend against incidents and intrusions regardless of where that source is, any time of day or regardless of what the attack type is. From a security standpoint having a SOC means that an organisation has the ability to respond faster, minimise the damage and the cost and safeguard their data and business continuity from the cyber threats our there. Ultimately, some type of SOC is going to allow those clients organisations that it serves to operate efficiently and with that peace of mind knowing that potential cyber threats can be identified and prevented in some sense of a real time manner regardless of how many assets or endpoints or locations that the organisation has. The SOC can provide a level of centralised view to ensure that the organisations assets are being monitored and that they are performing as needed and as they should be and not in any malicious manner.

In order to do that there are a variety of activities that need to be carried out by the SOC team, they have to cover a lot of ground.  A true SOC should have:

  • Proactive Monitoring
  • Threat response
  • Incident Recovery
  • Alert Severity Triage
  • Post-incident investigation
  • Asset Discovery
  • Activity Log Collection
  • Compliance Strategy

These elements come together and form a cohesive service that can be delivered in a continuous manner.

The average cost of a cyber breach on a SMB according to Sophos’s “State of Ransomware 2021” is $54,650 which can be crippling for some businesses and only 8% of businesses that pay a ransom get all of their data back. It is not only the financial risk that comes into play. Even one cyber-attack can damage an organisations professional reputation.

Whilst SOC is an additional expense, you need to remember that hackers don’t care how big or small your company is. If your data is available, if some port is open on the internet, or if there is some leak on credentials, they are going to exploit it.

With cybersecurity threats constantly changing, by having the Hewstone IT’s Security Conscious 2021 service in place allows businesses to continue their operations in a landscape where they are targets.
